BU97 Player of the Second Round – The Eventby Jonathan Spiteri18/03/2010
On Wednesday 18th March, our group had the pleasure to meet our midfielder, who proudly dons the number 6 shirt, Paul Fenech. My curiosity did not allow me not to ask him about his choice for wearing this number, especially after noticing his tattoo on his right wrist showing ‘VI’, which is the Roman number 6. Paul told us that this number means a lot to him since his father used to play with it on his back. Paul’s exquisite character extinguished the need for any ice-breakers, as he soon sat with the rest around the table and made himself one of us. After a few minutes of chatting, it was time for us to present him with a token, similar to those gifted to other players winning previous awards. Paul’s contribution during the second round was a commendable one, and the group’s final verdict was surely justified by his displays on the pitch. Most of us consider him the engine of our midfield. His incredible work rate makes our team look as if we are playing with an extra man, as he is always there ready to battle it out with many an opponent.
His personality and consistency also helped the likes of Rowen Muscat to fit in immediately, even if the latter lacked the required experience. The national coach also noted Paul’s performances, and awarded him with a call-up for the friendly match against Bulgaria. We are sure that he will become a valuable asset for our national team, as he already is for Birkirkara FC. Clearly in an upbeat mood, Paul immediately showed his appreciation for this prize, and thanked us all for it. His enthusiasm had deeper roots though. He underlined his and his team mates’ gratitude towards our group and the constant support we give them. He stated that without our backing the team would have never reached these unexpected heights. He asked us to carry on like this, and hopefully our efforts will be rewarded with winning the championship! We all wish Paul the best of luck for the upcoming matches this season, and for the years to come which, hopefully, will be enriched by the winning of various honours! |
